North Lake Memorial Hall, Sobetsu Town Local History Museum

History and hope wherever you are

The lake in the north of Yokozuna, the pride of the hometown that was born and raised in Sobetsu Town.
In honor of his great achievements, there are exhibits that trace the history of 18 years of sumo wrestling, as well as materials that describe the history and history of national sport sumo wrestling. In addition, the history and climate of Sobetsu Town is exhibited in the local museum in the same building.

◆ Yokozuna Kitanoumi (real name: Toshimitsu Obata)
Born in Sobetsu-cho, Usu-gun in May 1953.
Aspiring to sumo, he moved to Tokyo at the age of 13 and entered the Mihogaseki stable. Taking advantage of its excellent qualities, he pushes forward on the career path at an exceptional speed. In July 1974, he was promoted to the 55th Yokozuna, the youngest in history. After retiring in January 1985, he left a number of records such as winning 24 times in 18 years and winning the most 951 wins, and has been active as a master of the northern lake. In 2002, he became the chairman of the Japan Sumo Association. On November 20, 2015, the master of the northern lake passed away.

◆ Local History Museum

It exhibits the history and climate of the region that was built through the harsh nature and lifestyles of more than 120 years since the ancestors first put a hoe in Sobetsu Town in 1879.
○ A dwelling that reproduces the lifestyle of the battlefield at the time of pioneering ○ A corner of animal friends living in this area such as sika deer, squirrels, foxes, and wild birds
○ It is a museum where you can see the history of Sobetsu Town, such as the history of Showashinzan and Mt. Usu.
